Location: 862 Richmond Street West

Organizer: aluCine + Gabriela Aveiro-Ojeda

A talk and presentation of video games created by Latin American people, where panelists will discuss the impact of gaming culture in the creation and strengthening of our identity, as a connection between different cultures and as a language.

Panel Participants:

Presenting “I’ll Take Care of It”. Gabriela Aveiro-Ojeda is a freelance animator based out of Toronto, Canada. She has spoken at conferences on the topics of animation and storytelling in games, and the importance of successfully pairing the two. In her spare time, Gabriela is a co-director at Dames Making Games, a non-for profit which supports women and non-binary folk in making, playing, and changing games. Gabriela is developing a game exclusively for the festival! “I’ll Take Care Of It”.

AUGUSTO QUIJANO (Drinkbox Studios).

Presenting “Guacamelee!”. Augusto Quijano was born in Merida, Mexico. He moved to Toronto where he graduated from Seneca College’s animation program. Augusto is Concept Lead at DrinkBox Studios, where he has worked on the critically acclaimed “Tales from Space: About a Blob”, its sequel “Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!!!”, the award winning “Guacamelee!” and the studio’s current project: “Severed”. DrinkBox Studios is an independent Toronto-based video game developer. They are a pretty small team who makes the sort of games that they want to play, and, hopefully, a few other people like what they do. Guacamelee! is a Metroid-vania style action-platformer set in a magical Mexican inspired world. The game draws its inspiration from traditional Mexican culture and folklore, and features many interesting and unique characters. Guacamelee! builds upon the classic open-world Metroid-vania style of games, by adding a strong melee combat component, a new dimension switching mechanic, and cooperative same-screen multiplayer for the entire story. The game also blurs the boundaries between combat and platforming by making many of the moves useful and necessary for both of these.

ADOLFO AGUIRRE (Gaming Frontier – Lienzo).

Presenting “Mulaka”. Industrial and Systems Engineer with an interest in business, project management, public relations, and marketing. He has plenty of international study abroad experiences. A quick learner, he enjoys developing himself in rich multicultural environments. Co-founder at Gaming Frontier and Producer & Marketing Manager at Lienzo, he is producing and marketing video games as his job and he hosts a show about video games on YouTube. He is currently doing his best to contribute to the healthy growth of this industry in Mexico, Latin America and the world. He will be presenting his game Mulaka.
